Chartier, Alain

Chartier, Alain
(ca. 1385-ca. 1433)
   diplomat, writer
Born in Bayeux and educated at the university of Paris, Alain Chartier, who served both charles vi and the dauphin (later charles vii) as secretary during the 14th century, enjoyed a great literary renown (court pages, at the time, for example, were required to memorize some of his verses). The author of courtly (La belle Dame sans mercy, 1424) and patriotic poems, he was above all the first French political orator, with his Quadrilogue invectif (1422), a debate in prose among four allegorical characters representing the French social classes in an appeal for unity and in support of the king. Chartier wrote this after the great French defeat at Agincourt.
